Most Expensive NFT Ever Sold

The world's most expensive NFT just sold for $69 million. The Beeple Everydays: The First 5000 Days, a digital collage by the artist known as Beeple, was sold as an NFT (non-fungible token) in an auction organised by Christie's.

This makes it the third most expensive work by a living artist sold at auction, behind Jeff Koons and David Hockney. And it's the most expensive NFT ever sold.

So what is an NFT? Non-fungible tokens are digital assets that are unique and cannot be replaced. They're stored on a blockchain, which is a decentralised ledger that records transactions securely and transparently.

NFTs have been gaining in popularity in recent months, as they provide a way for artists to sell their work directly to fans and collectors, without going through a middleman. Beeple's auction signifies that the NFT market is maturing and attracting mainstream interest.

It's not just art that's being sold as NFTs. Last week, Jack Dorsey sold the first-ever tweet as an NFT for $US two million ($A). And earlier this month, an NBA Top Shot highlight reel featuring LeBron James sold for $US 200,000 ($A).

So what does the future hold for NFTs? It's hard to say. But one thing's for sure: the world of digital art just got a lot more expensive.
